What are the 5 major types of anxiety disorders

  1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

    • Excessive, uncontrollable worry about everyday life (health, work, relationships) lasting 6+ months.

    • Physical symptoms: fatigue, muscle tension, insomnia.

  2. Panic Disorder

    • Recurrent panic attacks (sudden, intense fear with heart palpitations, sweating, chest pain).

    • Often includes fear of future attacks (agoraphobia may develop).

  3. Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)

    • Extreme fear of social situations (speaking, eating in public) due to judgment or embarrassment.

    • May cause avoidance of social interactions.

  4. Specific Phobias

    • Intense fear of specific objects/situations (heights, spiders, flying).

    • Leads to avoidance, even when the threat is unrealistic.

  5. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

    • Intrusive thoughts (obsessions) + repetitive behaviors (compulsions) (e.g., handwashing, checking).

    • Driven by anxiety to "neutralize" feared outcomes.
