What Is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning or development. It commonly begins in childhood but can continue into adulthood.

Core Symptoms:

  1. Inattention – Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, disorganization.

  2. Hyperactivity – Excessive fidgeting, restlessness, or talking.

  3. Impulsivity – Acting without thinking, interrupting others.

Types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly Inattentive (Struggles with focus)

  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive (Restless/impulsive behavior)

  • Combined Type (Mix of both)

Causes & Risk Factors:

  • Genetics – Often runs in families.

  • Brain Structure – Differences in dopamine/norepinephrine activity.

  • Environmental Factors – Premature birth, exposure to toxins.

Treatment Options:

✔ Stimulants (Adderall, Ritalin) – Improve focus by boosting dopamine.
✔ Non-Stimulants (Strattera) – For those who don’t tolerate stimulants.
✔ Behavioral Therapy – Teaches coping strategies.
✔ Lifestyle Changes – Exercise, structured routines.

ADHD is manageable! Early diagnosis and tailored treatment can significantly improve quality of life.
